DESCRIPTION:
CSC present for sale this fantastic 914-6 Recreation, carried out by renowned US 914 specialist Ben McFarland at 914-6 Werkshop between 2000 and 2002, and based on a US dry-state late model 1975 914 2.0.

The Porsche 914 was a collaboration by Porsche and Volkswagen and launched in 1970 as an entry level 2 seat, mid-engine sports car as was also known as the VW-Porsche.

The car was designed with a long wheelbase to allow for a good-sized cabin with the engine located just behind the rear bulkhead. The car featured short overhangs, pop-up headlights, a removable composite targa roof panel and storage areas both front and rear (basically a very early Boxster).

The 914 was available with either Volkswagens 1.7 litre four-cylinder boxser engine producing 80PS or with Porsches 2.0 litre six-cylinder engine from the 911 T producing 110PS, this variant being referred to as the 914-6 and was only produced from 1970 to 1972.

In 1973, a 2.0 litre four-cylinder model based on the 1.7 VW producing 100PS was made available which was followed with a 1.8 litre, 85PS four-cylinder option.

The four-cylinder models were fitted with a four-stud wheel pattern and manufactured by coachbuilder Karmann at their Osnabruck factory. The six-cylinder models were fitted with a five-stud wheel pattern and were built at its main production site in Stuttgart.

Finding a good useable example of a genuine 914-6 these days is not an easy task and should you be fortunate enough to find one for sale, they command a high premium thanks to their low production numbers and their mechanical connection the their bigger brother the 1970’s 911 which makes them hugely collectible today.

The base car for this build was a 914 2.0 originally supplied in 1975 to a buyer in New Mexico where it remained until around 1990 when it was sold to a new owner in Arizona. In 2020, the car became the subject of a 914-6 conversion by Ben Mcfarland at 914-6 Werkshop in 2000.

Ben sourced a 1974 911S 2.7 engine which had covered 74,000 miles which was then stripped down and rebuilt before being fitted to the car. Additional conversion work included the 914-6 GT-pattern oil-cooler from Patric Motorsports installed in the front compartment, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system replaced with twin carburettors, a 911 front suspension swap including 911S light-alloy brake calipers and rear hub upgrade to accommodate a set of 15” light alloy FUCH wheels and a custom stainless steel header and exhaust.

Internally, the 914 received re-trimmed ‘basket weave’ seats and door trims, a new replacement dashboard, re-built centre console and a new carpet set whilst the exterior was re-finished in a fresh coat of Mars Red paint.

Once the work was completed and following 4000 miles of shake-down and adjustment to ensure all was good, the car was sold to a new owner based in Michigan around 2004 who owned the car until 2011 when it was purchased by the next owner in Arizona.

In 2011, the car was advertised for sale on the US auction site ‘bring a trailer’ and purchased by UK air-cooled specialists Greatworth Classics in Banbury who imported the 914 and had it registered for UK use.

The car was purchased from Greatworth Classics in July 2019 by the current owner and active member of the Porsche community. The car has since covered around 5,000 miles, mainly attending Porsche club events and driving rallies, sharing garage space with the owners 356 when not in use.

During this period, the 914 has been serviced and maintained by specialist UK independents such as Jaz Porsche, Ninemeister and the supplying dealer Greatworth Classics.

Externally, this 914 presents very well with very good paintwork, unblemished brightwork and good panel fitment, and the 15” Fuch alloy wheels remain in very nice condition with no major marks. Tyres are all matching and fairly recent with excellent tread remaining.

Internally, the car has a light patina but remains a well sorted space with all surfaces and trims in very good condition with just light signs of use as you would expect in a car knocking on for 50 years old. The removable Targa roof panel is in very good condition and can be unclipped and removed to give an ‘open air’ experience, and better access to the wonderful noise of the 2.7 flat six. The roof panel cleverly stores away in the rear boot area offering either hard top or open top motoring as the weather dictates whilst out on the road.

The engine bay is very clean, tidy with the conversion clearly being done with attention to detail which makes for an OEM look. The car has two luggage areas, the front compartment which despite the fitment of the oil cooler, still offers some very useful luggage space, and the rear boot area retains the original carpet and offers another very useful luggage compartment (unless the targa panel is stored there).

On the road, this little 914-6 has a unique charm. The surprisingly spacious cabin offers fantastic all-round visibility and an old school simplicity which is nothing but addictive. The original 901 ‘dog-leg’ 5 speed transmission feels tight and precise and is a joy to use once you get the hang of it and the steering comes alive once on the move. Brakes are progressive and smooth and the engine eager to rev when given the chance.

A quite different driving experience from a period 911, though still familiar to any classic enthusiast of the brand. The soundtrack however remains very familiar to any classic 911 owner and with much less weight to push around, the car offers the perfect balance of engagement and performance. Theres a lot to like about this well sorted 914-6 derived recreation.

This 914-6 Recreation was featured in the May 2019 edition of 911 & Porsche World magazine in which the car received a very positive review from motoring journalist Chris Horton who tested the car whilst it was for sale at Greatworth Classics, just prior to being purchased by the current owner. A copy of the magazine accompanies the car.
