CSC present for sale this excellent 1976 Porsche 911S targa, restored to a very high standard in recent years and more recently fitted with a 3.0SC power unit with the original 2.7 engine components included in the sale. The car underwent a major cosmetic restoration over 12 months from between July 2014 and then was subjected to a major mechanical restoration over 2 years from may 2018. The end result was a turn key classic 911 which looks great, starts on the button, runs and drives as it should.
DESCRIPTION:
This 1976 911S targa presents very nicely, finished in sliver metallic with complimenting black interior and polished roll hoop, headlight rings and Fuch alloy wheels.
Inside, the car retains all its original character and features including wind-up windows and OEM 3 spoke leather steering wheel. Of course the targa combines the best of both coupe and cabriolet in the form of its light-weight removable roof panel allowing open-air motoring and the enhanced soundtrack of the classic flat six engine.
The car does feature a very discreet modern addition in the form of Blupunkt’s fantastic ‘classic’ Bremen SQR 46 DAB head unit which offers modern media options such as DAB, Bluetooth, USB & AUX whist retaining the look and feel of the classic 911 factory radio units.
On the road, this 911S feels surprisingly eager and responsive, with the larger 3.0SC engine and the light weight of the car, swift progress can be made making easily keeping pace with modern day traffic. The car pulls strongly in each gear and once mastered, the 5 speed 915 gearbox be-comes a joy to operate giving superb levels of driver involvement.
Once on the move, the steering is light and responsive and gives the driver constant feel as to what the road surface is doing. The brakes are firm but progressive giving driver confidence and slowing the car with ease. Suspension is much more compliant than in latter air-cooled mod-els which along with the deeper sidewall tyres makes for an excellent balance of performance and comfort on the UK’s poor road surfaces.
HISTORY:
This US spec 911S targa was first registered in September 1976 by its supplying dealership in Philadelphia. Ordered in Silver metallic with black leatherette interior, optioned 6x15 alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and fog lights.
The car, which had been re-painted red at some point in its history was purchased from the US by GMUND Cars in Knaresborough in 2014 and earmarked for a full restoration and return to OEM specification.
The restoration work began in September 2014 with the car being deliv-ered to James Wood automotive refinishers for a comprehensive strip-down, repairs as required and re-paint in the cars original Silver metallic with the extensive work tacking around 10 months to complete.
To complement the cars fresh bodywork, the alloy wheels were refur-bished and the targa roof panel was re-trimmed to complete the cars fresh look. Internally, the 911 received a new carpet set, and re-trimmed surfaces. The front seats were stripped, rebuilt and re-trimmed in black leather and vinyl to a very high standard.
The 911S was registered with the DVLA on 9th July 2015 by GMUND Cars before being sold to the current owner later the same month with an in-dicated mileage of 171,000. The car was returned to GMUND on a couple of occasions for some snagging items to be delt with and for the next couple of services.
In 2018, the 911s was sent to Cheshire based Porsche Independents Ninemeister with engine issues resulting in a required & lengthy re-build. An alternative option was to install a 3.0 SC engine which Ninemeister had immediately available which benefited from a recent top-end rebuild and was ready to install. This became the obvious choice given time scales, cost effectiveness and ultimately the cars drivability.
The top-end rebuild work on the 3.0 engine includes uprated 993 cylinder head studs, new piston rings, refurbished cylinder head, 964 valves, head gasket & crank rear oil seal. Many of the compatible external ancil-laries such as heater blower, tin wear, & exhaust components were re-moved from the 2.7 unit and transferred to the 3.0 engine.
The 2.7 engine and its 915 transmission were removed from the car and separated. The 915 transmission was stripped with parts replaced and serviced as required before the unit was rebuilt and mated back up to the 3.0 engine prior to re-installation in the car.
The original 2.7 engine components, minus any compatible ancillaries re-used on the 3.0 unit, were returned to the current owner and are includ-ed in the sale. This will give any future owner the option to return the car to its original specification and a matching numbers car once again should they so wish. The targa has since been regularly serviced and maintained by Ninemeister and has been driven and enjoyed as intend-ed.
